Artist Statement

My work is a search for redemption: in my own life, in my community, and in the larger context of the world I live in. This search takes place in a collision of cultures and ideas, and is wrestled with in the context of a collision of mediums and techniques. The goal is the discovery of beauty, hope and meaning in the midst of suffering, confusion, disagreement, isolation and the abuse of resources and power. My work is abstract and embodies a high value for thick textured brush work while incorporating blind contour type line, atmospheric textures and photographic/collage elements.

Process is central for me. As I assemble materials and ideas and use them to wrestle through experiences and painful realities, I often stumble on perspective and hope. Sometimes the new perspective, the redemption, comes after I finish the work. In some cases it is a viewer's response to the work that opens my eyes to the beauty I couldn't see or the hope that was obscured to me.

My goal is that my work will connect emotionally and archetyypically with other peoples' journeys in such a way that in viewing them they feel the pain and struggle of their own lives and discover strength, hope and beauty in the midst of suffering.
